Kite Spots
Your guide to the best kitesurfing locations on the Silver Coast
Lagoa de Obidos
#1 Beginner Spot in EuropeLagoa de Obidos is a 5-kilometre flat-water lagoon and the heart of everything we do. The water is knee-to-waist deep across large sections, the thermal wind blows consistently from the north at 15 to 25 knots, and there are no waves, no currents, and no boat traffic to worry about.
It is widely regarded as one of the safest beginner kitesurf spots in Europe. But it is not just for beginners. The flat water and reliable wind make it equally popular for freestyle and foiling sessions. This is where you will spend most of your time on the water.
Lagoon Conditions
The Safest Playground
No waves. No currents. No boats. Shallow everywhere. If you fall, you just stand up.
The lagoon is a self-contained, flat-water paradise where every mistake is consequence-free. You can walk back to your kite in waist-deep water, relaunch without stress, and focus entirely on building your skills. For experienced riders, the glassy surface is perfect for flat-water freestyle tricks and foiling runs that would be impossible in ocean chop.
Other Kite Spots Nearby
Foz do Arelho
Where the lagoon meets the Atlantic. Ocean swell and side-shore wind create excellent conditions for wave riding. Strong currents at the river mouth demand solid experience and good kite control.
Peniche / Baleal
Ocean wave spot with powerful Atlantic swell. A 20-minute drive from The Lodge. Great for wave riding on big days, but strong currents and rocky sections make it suitable for experienced kiters only.
São Martinho do Porto
A sheltered, almost enclosed bay just 15 minutes south. An alternative flat-water option when lagoon wind is too light. The bay funnels and accelerates wind, sometimes offering rideable conditions when the lagoon is calm.
Wind Season Guide
Thermal Season
The prime kite season. Reliable thermal winds blow from the north almost every afternoon, typically 15 to 25 knots. The lagoon heats up, the sun is out, and you can count on wind 4 to 5 days a week. This is when The Lodge runs its camps and when the lagoon is at its best.
Storm Season
Atlantic low-pressure systems bring powerful winds and bigger swells. Sessions are less predictable but can be epic. The lagoon still works on south-wind days, and ocean spots like Peniche light up with wave-riding potential. Wetsuits recommended. Fewer crowds, lower prices.
How to Reach the Spots
The Lodge is located on the Silver Coast, 80 kilometres north of Lisbon — about an hour's drive from the airport. The lagoon is just minutes away from the house. We provide daily transfers to the kite spot so you never have to worry about logistics. Just grab your gear and hop in.
