October Kite Weeks and Winter Stays at The Lodge

September 2026 · 4 min read

Most people picture the lagoon in July: full beach, full house, thermal wind every afternoon. That's real, and it's great. But if you've got flexible dates, the two seasons most guests never think about might suit you better.

October is still a kite and wing month here, quieter and cheaper than summer. And from November to March, when the wind goes away, the house stays open for a completely different kind of stay.

October: the quiet kite month

The season at the lagoon runs well into autumn. October days are shorter and the water is cooler, so you'll ride in a wetsuit rather than board shorts, but the thermal wind still shows up and the lagoon still does what it does: flat, shallow, sandy, forgiving.

What changes is everything around the water. Fewer kites on the lagoon, more space to make your first rides without dodging anyone. More instructor attention, because the school isn't at capacity. Restaurants and beaches in the area go back to normal life. And the price drops.

The autumn offer

To make the shoulder season easy to say yes to, there's a discount on accommodation and lesson packages for autumn 2026:

  • 10% off for stays from 1 to 15 October
  • 15% off for stays from 16 October to 30 November

That applies to kitesurf camps, wing foil camps and the duo camp. Ask us about your dates and we'll send you the exact price with the discount applied. Late-season weeks are also the easiest time to get a private or semi-private slot without booking months ahead.

One honest note: in November the wind is no longer reliable enough to promise a kite week. If you're coming in November, come for the house, the coast and the surf, and treat any wind as a bonus.

November to March: the house stays open

Winter on this coast is storm season. No kite school runs on the lagoon, and we don't pretend otherwise. But The Lodge itself doesn't close, and winter here has its own logic.

The house is 200 metres from the beach, 90 kilometres north of Lisbon. It has eight rooms and a private studio, a pool, and a shared kitchen where you cook for yourself. Peniche and Baleal, some of the most consistent winter surf on the Portuguese coast, are a short drive away. Nazaré is under an hour away, and Óbidos, the medieval town, is a short drive.

From November you can book the rooms as a simple self-catering stay, with no camp, no lessons, no fixed schedule:

  • Short stays from two or three nights: a surf weekend, a coastal break, a stopover between Lisbon and Porto
  • Long stays from one month up to four months, at a reduced monthly rate: for remote workers, winter surfers, or anyone who'd rather spend the grey months by the Atlantic than in a city

Who winter at The Lodge works for

  • Surfers. Winter is the big-swell season in Peniche and Baleal, and the house is a calm base twenty to thirty minutes from the breaks. Bring your own board or ask us about the local options.
  • Remote workers. A quiet house by the sea, a kitchen, a desk, a fast road to Lisbon when you need it. A month or three here costs a fraction of a winter in a city.
  • Groups and families. With eight rooms, a group can take the whole house for a week and run it like a home.
  • Past guests. If you've done a camp with us and you want to come back for the place rather than the wind, winter is the time.

What winter isn't

To keep it honest:

  • It's not a kite holiday. If you want wind, come between April and October, or join the Vietnam trip for warm-water riding in the European winter.
  • It's not a hotel. There are no daily group dinners in winter. You cook, or you eat out in Foz do Arelho, Caldas da Rainha or Óbidos.
  • It's not a party. It's a quiet house on a quiet coast in the off season. That's the point.
